Ipoh Umno

IPOH (Nov 17): The state government must explain why the Perak Umno building is able to sit on prime land by paying only a nominal premium charge of RM100 per lot, says Canning assemblyman Wong Kah Woh.

He said he had raised the matter in the three state assembly sittings since November last year, but his questions were rejected by speaker Datuk Seri S K Devamany.

"It is scandalous that a political party is given such a privilege and what more, approved by a state executive council consisting of a majority Umno members at the time," he said in Ipoh yesterday.

Wong said according to the state government's reply to his question in August last year, the 3,072 sq m plot was initially registered under Cash Hotel Sdn Bhd, whose main shareholder was Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP).

He said the building site next to Impiana Hotel in Jalan Gopeng was approved in 2004 and the fee approved in a state executive council meeting, then led by Barisan Nasional (BN).

"As leaders are mandated to look out for the interests of the public, an explanation is due as to why the token was accorded.

"The terms of the deal with PKNP should be revealed. What were the benefits to the state agency?

He added that nominal premiums were usually reserved for well-performing developers or charitable purposes.

Wong said he believed the BN-led government might have similarly awarded land plots to other political parties.

"List all who have received such plots, including the opposition parties, any.

"Please explain. Otherwise the matter can be considered breach of trust and we will proceed to lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti Corruption Agency," he said. -- The Malaysian Insider
