KUALA LUMPUR: The International Real Estate Federation (Fiabci) is expecting 1,200 participants, half of which are from overseas, during its 66th World Real Estate Congress from May 26 to 31 at the One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya.

“According to the United Nations World Urbanization report, more than half of the global population currently live in urban areas. It is projected to reach 70% by 2050. Hence, urbanisation is an important and crucial issue to be discussed,” said Fiabci Malaysia president Tengku Datuk Abdul Aziz Tengku Mahmud when announcing about the congress today.

The Fiabci World Real Estate Congress is an event organised annually in May. The objective is to help real estate professionals improve their business competitiveness through networking and exchanging of views on real estate.

This year’s theme is “Urbanisation: Perils or Prosperity”, and congress will host 20 guest speakers from abroad.

“We are excited as the congress will assemble eminent speakers from around the world to share with us their expertise and experience handling urbanisation issues in their countries,” said Fiabci Malaysian Chapter secretary general Dr Yu Kee Su.

“Our theme is very clear, it is about the double edged sword of urbanisation,” said Fiabci Malaysia publicity director Michael Geh.

“They are [the speakers] selected and invited as experts in their field. We have a morning session on affordable housing from the Chinese Real Estate Association and two speakers from Singapore. I believe these topics are relevant as we are entering a stage where affordability is an issue in Malaysia,” said Geh.

Yu added that the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib will be officiating the opening ceremony. Fiabci will announce the winners of the Fiabci award at the Prix d’ Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on May 30. The event will be graced by the Yang Di-Pertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir and Tunku Ampuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud.
