SEREMBAN (Nov 2): Negeri Sembilan has politely reminded 592 households that they need to comply with state waste separation requirements, according to Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government committee chairman Datuk Jalaluddin Alias.

He said officials had visited nearly 220,000 homes to date, of which most were aware of the rule but not fully putting it to practice.

“We are now active with our on-the-ground awareness campaigns, to educate the public about waste separation and to put the knowledge into practice,” he told reporters after a cleaning operation in Seremban town.

He said the on-the-ground operation, known as ‘Ops Mata Hati’, involves a team checking residential areas and providing advice, as well as suggestions where needed.

From Sept 1, households in seven states were required to separate solid waste at source or from their homes to reduce the volume of waste going to landfills.

As a measure of advocacy, households failing to abide by the order will be given a warning notice before the law is enforced, based on the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act. A maximum compound of up to RM1,000 can be imposed on residents refusing to separate their waste.

Meanwhile, Jalaluddin said the cleaning operation today covered all business centre areas including Rembau, Jelebu, Tampin, Nilai, Kuala Pilah, Port Dickson and Jempol.

The operation was a joint effort by Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp), local authorities and state government.

He added that 38 machines were used in the operation in all eight districts, including vacuum cleaners, water jets, road sweepers, open tippers and water tankers.

“This operation will be carried out for two weeks by SWCorp and SWM Environment Sdn Bhd,” he said, adding that all business premises should come out and clean their surrounding areas every Monday. -- The Malaysian Insider
