KUALA LUMPUR (June 15): Prasarana Malaysia Bhd will begin to award the first batch of work packages for the upcoming RM9 billion Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3) in the next two to three months.

At a media briefing today, Prasarana president and chief executive officer Datuk Azmi Abdul Aziz said the first batch of work packages would consist of the building of workers' quarters and depot, and certain advanced work for the LRT3 system.

He said Prasarana has identified the actual sites for all the pillars and also confirmed the locations of the stations, as well as began the land acquisition.

However, Azmi declined to comment on the estimated construction cost for the 37-kilometre LRT3, saying that design works have yet to be finalised at this juncture.

"The conceptual design is completed, so the next step is to finalise thousands of other smaller parts of the design. So before we get the details, it is difficult for us to share how much the actual cost would be," he said.

Earlier today, Prasarana had shortlisted 24 companies as pre-qualified for three LRT3 system's work packages.

The three packages consist of track works and conductor power rails, depot equipment and track maintenance vehicles, and automated fare collection.

"The tender process is now in full swing and we want to reiterate our commitment that all parties will adhere to high standards of integrity throughout the execution of the project," Azmi said.

Previously on May 4, Prasarana shortlisted 96 companies for the other eight work packages for LRT3, the third LRT line in Klang Valley that aims to connect Klang and Bandar Utama by 2020.

A joint venture between Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd and George Kent (M) Bhd was appointed on Sept 4, 2015 as the project delivery partner for LRT3 project.— theedgemarkets.com
