JOHOR BAHRU (June 6): A property agent here has found out the hard way that it does not pay to cheat clients.

Muhammad Asid Abd Jalil, 35, was sentenced to 16 years’ jail and ordered to be given 30 strokes of the rotan by the Magistrate’s Court here for 30 counts of cheating in the purchase and investment of auction homes, Bernama reported yesterday.

Magistrate Mohd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias meted out the sentence on Muhammad Asid, of Taman Bukit Dahlia, Pasir Gudang, who pleaded guilty to all charges.

The property agent was charged with dishonestly inducing 30 individuals to hand over RM382,117 through their bank accounts and a gold chain in Johor Bahru between May 2013 and April 2, 2016 for the purchase and investment of auction houses.

Muhammad Asid was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provided for a prison term of up to 10 years, whipping, and liable to a fine.

Representing Muhammad Asid was lawyer Mohamad Isa Mohamad Basir. During mitigation, Mohamed Isa said his client is the sole breadwinner of his family — Muhammad Asid has two wives who are unemployed and “the second wife just delivered their second child 10 days ago”, according to Bernama.

Mohamed Isa also said that his client has to take care of his mother-in-law who needs medical care.

Mohd Azlan Shah sentenced Muhammad Asid to 12 months’ jail and a stroke of the cane on each count.

Some of the jail sentences are to be served consecutively, and others concurrently, from the date of arrest (last May 5).
