Overview

Sungai Mati which literally means ‘dead river’ in Bahasa Malaysia, is a small town located in the Tangkak district of the state of Johor. The town got its name due to its nature of being an ox-bow lake which was formed from the Muar River. Sungai Mati used to be a riverport. In fact, the Muar River and the Pahang River in unification used to be an essential east-west route, which was known as ‘Laluan Penarikan’, for traditional river transport. This route has been documented in Malaysia’s secondary history text.

Sungai Mati New Village is also located here.  This new village was established in 1947 when the Communist Party of Malaya fought a fierce battle against the British. Local residents of the new village earn their livelihood from the local oil palm and rubber estates as well as fruit orchards. The villagers benefit from the general infrastructure and facilities provided by the government in the village including a local police station, a post office as well as a government clinic.

There are no lack of education options in this village with schools such as SRJK (C) Pei Hwa, SMJK (C) Pei Hwa, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Abdullah.
