Overview

Most famous for its close proximity to Penang's most famous tertiary education institution, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Batu Uban is a mere 2km from the Penang Bridge on the island.

Although it is 10km from Georgetown City Centre, the area has its fair share of amenities including clinics and commercial activities.

These services cater to the high population of students who live within the area. There are also amenities in Gelugor, a few kilometres away.

Batu Uban has seen development with its many apartments and condominiums, the likes of N-Park and E-Park, some of the pioneer high-rise developments.

Historically, it is said that the east central neighbourhood houses one of the earliest settlements on the island - a Malay village - established by a Minangkabau sailor. The Sultan of Kedah had allowed him to set up residence as early as in the 1700s, way before the arrival of Sir Francis Light who founded Penang.

Amenities and Facilities

Amenities are found in abundance within the Batu Uban and Gelugor neighbourhood with eateries, public schools, vernacular schools and a market in Lip Sin. The closest Tesco hypermarket is just 3km away, near the e-Gate commercial centre, just off the Penang Bridge.

Accessibility and Transportation

Batu Uban, located some 9km from the Penang General Hospital, is accessible via Rapid Penang buses and taxis. The closest hotels are Vistana Hotel in Sungai Nibong, Equatorial Hotel in Bukit Jambul and the Eastin Hotel near the largest mall on the island, Queensbay Mall.
