Overview

Besides being home to the Penang International Airport which is some five kilometres away from the Industrial Free Zone, known for its semiconductor multinational companies, Bayan Lepas is also known for the island's tourist attraction of the Snake Temple.

The small town centre can be found at the junction of what was known as Jalan Sungai Ara or Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim and Jalan Bayan Lepas. It is also where the market is located.

Property Development

Located some 12.2km from the Penang Bridge, it was reported in November that there would be a total of some 60 acres in land reclamation in two neighbourhoods – Bayan Bay and Bayan Mutiara. This will see the construction of a velodrome, football field, an international swimming pool and houses.

Separately, as part of a federal government project, some shophouses, including pre-war houses, were broken down before mid-2015 for road expansion and the plan is speculated to include the Department of Civil Aviation, the Bayan Lepas community hall and the police station and its living quarters. It was also reported that the road expansion to ease traffic congestion after the opening of the Second Penang Bridge of the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam bridge which is some 17.8km away, will include two overhead bridges.

Amenities and Facilities

Located some 27km from Georgetown City and connected to it via the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Bayan Lepas houses Penang's largest shopping mall – Queensbay Mall.

Hotels are not in abundance in Bayan Lepas except for Eastin Hotel, next to Queensbay, but a few are located very close to its boundaries including Equatorial Hotel in Bukit Jambul and Olive Tree Hotel. There are also many vacation homes and service apartments within Bayan Lepas.

The Rapid Penang bus service plies through Bayan Lepas' town and villages and there are many eateries, including the Line Clear branch, seafood restaurants and coffee shops. Other facilities in the town include clinics and department stores like Sunshine Square.
