Some 3.6km from Bukit Mertajam town centre, Berapit is the home of badminton star Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
A humble village within the Seberang Perai Tengah district of Bukit Mertajam, the main road, Jalan Berapit services the area.
There are schools in Berapit but only one public school – Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Berapit – and two primary Chinese school branch. A National Youth Skills Institute is also located in the area as well as a badminton hall, possibly an ode to the national sports icon.
The main road connects Jalan Arumugam Pillai in Bukit Mertajam town to Jalan Kampung Mengkuang, located in the north. Much of Berapit remains undeveloped but it is en route to the Mengkuang Dam – a popular recreational spot with the local community for picnics, jogs and bicycling.
Also a popular spot in Berapit is the Chinese Cemetery which was recently developed into a six-storey columbarium within the Hock Teik Cheng Sin Temple.
