Bukit Tengah is an industrial area in central Seberang Perai District, Penang. It is named after Kampung Bukit Tengah which is located next to the Mercedes-Benz automobile showroom.

This is a rapidly-growing area with a number of recently completed as well as proposed gated-and-guarded residential developments. Most of these residential areas are located only a stone’s throw away from the Icon City Commercial Hub. Taman Indah was developed right beside the hill, and promises to envelope its residents in tranquility. Various types of housing are available here, namely bungalows, semi-dees and terrace houses, which offers a signature lifestyle together with a strategic location to various amenities and facilities surrounding the development. Meanwhile, Central Way is an example of a gated-and-guarded residential development located here.

Amenities and Facilities

The Bukit Tengah Industrial Park developed in the late 1980s is an industrial area in Bukit Mertajam. Among the companies having plants here are Dell, Leader Steel, Guppy Plastic Industry, Alpha Master, Blaupunkt, Dell APCC2, Prime Pharmaceutical and Schlumberger. The park is unlikely to grow any further as its surrounding areas have been developed into housing estates including Taman Bayu Mutiara and Taman Sri Rambai. Amongst the amenities available here is a Petronas petrol station along Jalan Bukit Tengah. Also, close to the industrial park is the food and beverage precinct of Juru Auto City.

Icon City, one of the newer, more exciting places that have sprung up in mainland Penang was designed to turn the area into a prestigious commercial belt. It is an epicurean cum social hub featuring an extensive range of restaurants, bars and cafes because food is a serious business in Penang. East Asian, western and fusion food are the most popular types served here. While Icon City was probably not designed as a tourist attraction, the recently operative hotel within the vicinity may just prove otherwise.

Also located in Bukit Tengah is Highway Auto-City, a venue for automotive operations, food and beverage outlets as well as entertainment. It is currently one of the most successful one-stop centres in the country. Numerous outdoor events and celebrations like roadshows, concerts, carnivals, exhibitions, motor sports and cultural festivals are hosted here. For instance, Highway Auto City has collaborated with SIC to promote international races and events such as the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix (F1), Japan GT and MotoGP. 

For residents in this area, there are quite a number of kindergartens, preschools, nursery cum daycares in and around Bukit Tengah. Additionally, one can find adequate public schools including Chinese national-type schools located nearby.


Accessibility and Transportation

The established township of Bukit Tengah is strategically located with easy access to Bukit Mertajam and Perai Industrial Area. In addition, it is a mere minute’s drive to Juru Autocity and Penang Bridge as it is situated very close to the North-South Expressway. Jalan Bukit Tengah is part of the main trunk road. It links Jalan Pengkalan to the north with Bukit Minyak to the south. Along this stretch is the Bukit Tengah Industrial Park, the Sri Rambai Light Industry Park and the Utaria Industrial Park.

Bukit Tengah Railway Station is a newly built railway station in Seberang Perai. It is located off Jalan Baru in Bukit Mertajam. The station is the penultimate on the spur line between the Bukit Mertajam Railway Station, which is a railway interchange, and the Butterworth Railway Station, which is the terminus. The entrance to the station is located near the off ramp of the Bukit Tengah Flyover.
