Sungai Pinang refers to the neighborhood on Penang Island situated between Sungai Pinang Road and its namesake Sungai Pinang River. This neighborhood is close to Jelutong and George Town.
Sungai Pinang flows east, goes under the Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway and empties into the Straits of Malacca where the Summer Place Condominium is located. The river was once atrociously polluted and neglected with garbage deposits. But all that changed with the Sungai Pinang Beautification Project launched in 2008 which involved filtering out garbage, the building of a new jetty for tourists and local fishermen, construction of a new Sungai Pinang Bridge, improving water quality and the ongoing flood mitigation project.
Historically, the riverine settlements along the banks of Sungai Pinang consisted of Kedahan Malays, North Sumatrans, Indian Muslims and Indian Hindus who settled many centuries ago even before the island fell into the control of the British East India Company. Today there are many mosques and Hindu shrines along the river bank. Kampung Rawa, which falls within the neighborhood of Sungai Pinang, is formed from one such settlement where North Sumatrans settled. Many people along the banks have been resettled elsewhere while the deepening and widening of the river takes place. Aside from these settlements there are two large residential properties in the form of PRR Jalan Sungai, low-cost high-rise apartment, and Taman Sri Pinang, medium-cost apartment complex consisting of two 23-storey blocks. Jabatan Kerja Raya Pulau Pinang is a government department also located in this area.

Sungai Penang Food Court is very popular among locals for a wide variety of cuisine options offered by various stalls of which the East Coast BBQ has a particularly high reputation.
