Subang Jaya, or Subang to the locals, is a suburban city within Klang Valley in the state of Selangor. It is about 20 kilometres west from Kuala Lumpur city centre.
Subang is the fifth most populous city in Malaysia and consists of various sections and districts such as SS12 to SS19, Sunway, USJ, Putra Heights and Batu Tiga. It is governed by the Subang Jaya Municipality Council (MPSJ).
The area was formerly a rubber plantation called Seafield Estate, was developed by Sime UEP Properties from 1974 the suburb of Subang Jaya. Subsequently, Sime UEP proceeded to develop USJ and thereafter Putra Heights and the surrounding areas.
Amenities and Facilities
There are many retail malls in the area such as Subang Parade (the first mall in the area and when opened in 1988, was the longest mall in South East Asia), Empire Subang, Sunway Pyramid and AEON Big Hypermarket. In Sunway, the Sunway Lagoon Water Park is a popular attraction for locals and foreigners.
The main commercial district in SS15 serves the area well and is a popular spot with boutiques, trendy cafes, contemporary restaurants, and hawker stalls. A popular venue is Asia Cafe in the middle of SS15, which is well known for its collection of hawker stalls, internet cafes and pool centres, favoured by the student population in the area. Colleges nearby include Taylor’s College and Inti International College Subang.
Additionally, there are plenty of high-rise office buildings and serviced apartments in the area too. There are also several high end hotels (Grand Dorsett, Holiday Villa) and budget hotels to cater to the travelling business community as the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (the hub for Firefly, Berjaya Air and Malindo) is 10 minutes away.
At Terminal 3 of the airport, one can go for helicopter tours by Helistar or take private flying lessons offered by Subang Flying Club.
Another attraction is the Subang Ria Park, which is located at the entrance to Subang and along the Federal Highway, a mature public recreational park. It has a jogging track, a pond for recreational fishing, restaurant and paintball park (TT Sports Park).
The once derelict Kompleks Kemudahan Kemasyarakatan MPSJ (3K Complex) has been taken back by the Council for management and will be reopened to the public who wants to use its sports facilities or space for private or public events.
There are also places of worship in Subang, such as Masjid Darul Ehsan, Church of St Thomas Moore, Sri Varatharajah Perumal Temple, Kingdom Life Church, Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints and Subang Jaya Buddhist Association Centre.
Some new developments in Subang are the Tropicana Metropark (mixed development inspired by ideal living in the Yarra Valley, Melbourne) and The Suave Residences (high rise low density freehold residences with commercial title in the heart of Subang).
Accessibility and Transportation
With the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Sunway line that connects Sunway and Subang, the government has launched the nation’s first public transport system that is environmentally friendly.
Other infrastructure improvements are the extension of the Kelana Jaya LRT line to Subang to USJ, Summit, Putra Heights and eventually to Ampang and Sri Petaling.
