Review decision on Lynas: Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 21): PKR president Anwar Ibrahim (pictured) has called on the government to review the decision to extend Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s operating licence in Gebeng, Kuantan, which is due to expire in September, by six months.

According to Anwar, discussions should also continue to be held to fine-tune the decision made.

“I urge the government to call for a review of the decision. But I think it should be done through effective discussions,” he said.

Anwar said this at a press conference after the PKR presidential tour to the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur here yesterday.

He was commenting on the government's decision last Thursday to renew Lynas’ licence by six months to operate the rare earth processing plant with some key conditions.

The government has required Lynas to build a Permanent Disposal Facility (PDF), submit plans for construction of a cracking and leaching facility overseas and terminate research and development activities related to the reuse of the 'Water Leach Purification' residue as CondiSoil in agriculture.

The decision has drawn a number of reactions from the public, including some who want Lynas to use the six-month period to provide a clearer picture of its operations to the public.
