20 oil palm estate workers lose quarters in fire


BINTULU (Sept 16): Twenty oil palm estate workers lost their quarters in a fire at Ladang Sepakau 3 in Sungai Asap, Jalan Bakun this morning.

In a statement, the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department's operations centre said the fire which razed two blocks of wooden homes, was put out by a team of firemen at 3.21 pm.

The department explained that although it had received a distress call on the incident at 10.36 am, the team of firefighters only arrived at the scene at 1.21 pm as the estate was located 215 kilometres from the fire station.

The affected workers who were unhurt, comprised nine locals and 11 Indonesians. 

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
