Two chalets, restaurant in Berjaya Tioman Resort destroyed in fire

KUANTAN (Sept 19): Two chalets and a restaurant in Berjaya Tioman Resort on Tioman Island, Rompin, near here, were destroyed in a fire that broke out early yesterday morning.

Resort manager Charles Eman said the fire broke out around 2am in one of the rooms before spreading to a restaurant nearby.

"However, we are grateful that the guests who stayed in the two rooms were able to escape before the fire spread and were moved to other rooms away from the affected area," he said when contacted by Bernama here yesterday.

Charles said the fire spread so quickly, possibly due to the building being made of wood, but the quick action of the resort staff who had undergone fire-fighting training helped the guests not to panic.

Meanwhile, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director, Nor Hisham Mohammad said it received a distress call at 2.45am and the operation was also assisted by the island’s team of volunteer firefighters.

"The fire was put out by 8.15am. The cause of the fire and amount of losses are still under investigation," he added.
