120 childcare centres in Penang resume operations from June 15

GEORGE TOWN (June 6): A total of 120 registered childcare centres in Penang are allowed to reopen in stages beginning June 15, with 26 of them to open in the first phase.

State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the state government had initially intended to allow private nurseries to begin operation from June 8 but postponed to June 15 following updated standard operating procedures guidelines by the Health Ministry.

He said the enhanced SOPs will be issued to all operators as a reference before operations resume.

"All nursery operators registered with the Penang Social and Welfare Department (JKM) who want to resume operations must submit a letter of undertaking to observe the SOPs.

"They must also inform the District Health Office so the nurseries can be inspected before they start their operations.

"After the inspection, the operators also must obtain an authorisation letter to operate from the state JKM and to ensure that the number of children does not exceed 50% capacity at a time.

"This is to prevent new clusters among childcare centres children," he said in a statement here yesterday.

For the 15 childcare centres at public sector workplaces which were allowed to resume operations on June 1, Phee said the state government in collaboration with other agencies especially JKM had conducted checks on them.

Of the total, only nine registered nurseries were allowed to operate, he said, adding that overall, the compliance level was found to be satisfactory.
