Man dies in Alor Setar house fire, family members escape

ALOR SETAR (Sept 15): A man died while three of his family members managed to escape after their house in Taman Malik here caught fire early today.

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department deputy operations director, Senior Controller 1 Mohamadul Ehsan Mohd Zain, said Roslan Abu Bakar, 56, died after he got trapped in the blaze while his wife, 52, and two children aged 15 and 17, survived the incident.

He said 15 firemen rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 5.32 am.

"Upon reaching the scene, the firemen set out to control the blaze. The fire destroyed 90 per cent of the two-storey terrace house, three cars and a motorcycle.

"The victim’s body was found at the main door, and he is believed to have been trapped while trying to put out the fire," he said in a statement, here, today.

The body was handed over to the police for further investigation.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated. However, we are not dismissing the possibility it was triggered by an electrical short circuit," he said.
