Ayub: Johor local authorities to have 24 councillors by month end

JOHOR BAHRU (Oct 24): All 16 local authorities in Johor will each have 24 councillors by the end of this month, said state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Ayub Jamil.

He said in a statement today that the appointment was to ensure smooth running of the local authorities which currently have between eight and nine councillors.

Ayub said the last phase of the appointment which involves 155 individuals to complete the total of 384 councillors in all 16 local authorities throughout Johor would be carried out soon.

According to the Local Government Act 1976, local authority shall consist of the mayor or president and not less than eight and not more than 24 councillors, he added.

He explained that all appointments are made in accordance with the division of the number of councillors representing the the political parties involved, taking into account various factors, including the position of the representation of each party in each area.
