KUALA LUMPUR (May 24): Aecom Technology Corp has been awarded a US$42 million (RM131.88 million) contract to conduct an architectural and engineering study for the proposed Malaysia-Singapore rapid transit system (RTS) link.

The contract was awarded by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and Singapore's Land Transport Authority, said Aecom in a statement to the media on Wednesday.

"We are delighted to play a key role in this important transport infrastructure project, which will help better connect commuters and visitors between Singapore and Malaysia," said chairman and CEO John M Dionisio.

Aecom said it will determine the technical parameters and proposed options for a "convenient and cost-effective system" that aims to be well-integrated with public transport services in Singapore and Malaysia.

This development comes after Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, minister in the prime minister's department, indicated that the two countries require 18 months in order to settle on the best option concerning the RTS.

Nor Mohamed said in January that the process would begin with the selection of a consultant for the proposed project. He said 18 months is needed to identify the consultant and find the most viable option.

Aecom is a leading provider of professional technical and management support services for public and private clients in over 130 countries. It has served a wide range of markets including transport, facilities, environmental, energy and water.

According to Aecom, it registered US$8.2 billion in revenue for the 12 months ended March 31. It typically registers an annual revenue in excess of US$8 billion, it added.
