MELAKA (June 13): Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) has requested Industrialised Building System (IBS) developers to use the services of local class F contractors at 1Malaysia People-Friendly Home (RMR1M) buliding sites.

Its chairman, Datuk Idris Haron said this was to help the local contractors to enjoy the nation's economic spillover.

"If an RMR1M is built in the Tangga Batu constituency, the IBS developers should nominate contractors from the Tannga Batu area itself...SPNB is not only helping the public by building RMR1Ms but we also want to help the local contractors as well," he told reporters after launching the 'Message From Prison' programme at the Sungai Udang Prison Complex here, today.

Idris, who is also Tangga Batu member of parliament, said he had received complaints from local contractors regarding IBS suppliers who only wanted to nominate contractors favoured by them from Kuala Lumpur to build the houses.

He said the developers were of the opinion that most of the contractors outside the capital were still not skilled in IBS technologies.

However, he said developers should train contractors involved to help the government achieve the target of building 10,000 units of RMR1M by the end of this year.

Asked if the process of training the contractors would delay the housing projects, Idris said it would only take a short time to master the IBS technology.

Meanwhile, he said 3,200 units of RMR1M had been built in the country to date. — Bernama
