SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan government has agreed to give discounts to quit rent defaulters and allow the landowners to pay in installments.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said some landowners owed thousands in quit rent for accumulating annual payments, which include fines amounting to 10 times the amount for late payment.

"They panic after we send notices to seize the land after five or six years of not paying quit rent," he told reporters after the State Executive Council (Exco) meeting here on May 19.

Mohamad said under the plan, defaulters would only have to pay 5% penalty and not fined as was the case under the computerised payment system.

"The landowners can now pay in installments unlike the one payment practiced previously but they must pay 20% first as proof of commitment.

"If the quit rent is RM100 annually, then they have to pay that much and not less but in installments," he added.

Seremban district has the highest quit rent arrears amounting about RM20 million of the overall RM30 million. --Bernama
