KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be making its third appearance in the 14th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2014 (VB 2014) in Italy.

The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) has teamed up with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp to showcase Malaysian architectural designs and ideas at the invitation-only event.

VB 2014’s theme is “Fundamentals”, and the theme for the Malaysian Pavilion is “Sufficiency”.

With participation by invitation-only, including for the 2010 and 2012 exhibitions, Malaysia has gained recognition from the organiser, said PAM in a press statement recently.

PAM said the objective of Malaysian participation is to unveil Malaysian “architectural idiosyncrasies, ideology and trends”.The organising committee of VB 2014 is calling for video or multimedia entries for the Malaysian Pavilion. Submissions should express the Malaysian theme, and  be about two to four minutes long.

The competition is open to all Malaysian schools of art and design, multimedia, interior design and architecture under group (maximum five students) or individual categories, with no limit in number of submissions. The winning entry will be showcased at VB 2014 and cash prizes will be given to the top three submissions. Registration will end on March 15.

The Venice Architecture Biennale is considered the most prestigious architectural event in the world. It was formally established in 1980, and exhibits are arranged under different pavilions with different themes. VB 2014 will be held from June 7 to November 23 with previews on June 5 and 6 at the Arsenale in Venice.

According to this year’s Biennale curator, Rem Koolhaas, the theme was chosen to focus on a fresh understanding of the richness of architecture’s fundamental repertoire.
