ALOR SETAR (Dec 14): The Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) has sealed properties in a house and five business premises owned by defaulters who failed to settle outstanding quit rent for the past two to 14 years.
Its revenue division head Azalina Abdul Rahman said the action was taken after countless notices sent to the owners went unheeded.
She said the owners of the house and business premises owed RM19 million in quit rent while the operation today involved arrears amounting to RM25 million.
"The operation was carried out under Section 148 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) which empowered the MBSA to open doors of houses or business premises although the owners would stop us from doing so," she told reporters here on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, MBSA assistant administrative officer Azizah Hamid urged residents to remove buntings and decorative palm blossom for wedding ceremonies after the events were over.
"Although, technically it is wrong in law to do so, we allow it on condition that they are removed after the wedding ceremonies ended.
"However, do not fix them at traffic lights as they could obstruct traffic and action could be taken against errant residents," she said. — Bernama
