DOHA (May 3): Malaysian companies are urged to grab the opportunities in the Gulf countries, particularly in Qatar, which is preparing to host Fifa World Cup 2022.

World Chambers Federation vice chair Tan Sri Mustafa Mansur said: "Qatar is looking at developing its infrastructure (for the World Cup) and it requires a lot of construction work, materials and also expertise.

"Hence, the MSE 2O12, organised by Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation in conjunction with the Project Qatar International exhibition, is timely in view of the rapid growth of building and construction in Qatar," he told reporters on the sidelines of the Malaysia Services Exhibition 2012 (MSE 2012).

The MSE 2012 is held in conjunction with the Project Qatar International exhibition.

Malaysian companies, especially in the construction and services sectors, are no strangers to the Qatari market.

Among the projects currently being constructed by Malaysian companies in Qatar included the Khalifa Olympic Stadium, new Doha International Airport and Dukhan Highway.

Meanwhile, the National ICT Association of Malaysia president Shaifubahrim Salleh said countries in the Gulf regarded Malaysia as a leader in many areas.

"We do have a reputation here. If we are serious, it is a good opportunity for Malaysian companies to come and do business here," he said.

Nevertheless, he said Malaysian companies that are interested to carry out business in Qatar should understand the culture in the Gulf countries, particularly local needs, if they want to succeed in the country.

Among the areas that have potential for Malaysian companies to tap into are construction-related business, services and ICT, he added. — Bernama
