IPOH (May 30): The Federal government has been asked to expedite the Perak state government's proposal to set up the Pulau Pangkor Development Authority (PPDA) to boost the tourism industry in the island.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said once the PPDA was set up, it would not only boost tourism in Pulau Pangkor, but play a major role in developing the tourism sector in Teluk Batik, Teluk Senangin and Lumut.

"All for locations has vast potential to become prominent tourism destinations," he told reporters after chairing a state exco meeting here on Wednesday.

He said the Pulau Pangkor Development Authority would play a similar role played by the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) which has succeeded in turning Langkawi into a preferred tourist destination.

Zambry said the state government had also proposed to turn Pulau Pangkor into a duty-free zone to attract foreign tourist.

Last year 400,000 visited Pulau Pangkor but the numbers have almost doubled this year, he said. — Bernama
