BUKIT MERTAJAM (Mar 1): The Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) will build 238 low-cost housing units in the near future with an overall cost of RM15 million.

Perda chairman Datuk Azhar Ibrahim said the 1,000 sq ft homes are expected to be ready in two years on eight hectares of Perda-owned land.

"Eligible individuals can obtain these low-cost freehold homes through hire-purchase schemes. This is a government initiative to allow people to own homes and lead a more comfortable life," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after handing over keys to Mohd Daud Abu Bakar, 39, a participant of the resettlement programme in Kampung Permatang Tok Subuh, Bukit Minyak here on Thursday.

The resettlement programme, located on a 0.96ha site owned by Perda, comprises 13 houses built by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) and is expected to be completed by this month.

According to Azhar, 24 people have submitted applications to the SPNB to join the programme, of which 16 were eligible. Three of them opted to build their own homes at the site. — Bernama
