KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Group’s construction arm, Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd, was named Builder of the Year at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2013 yesterday.

In addition, the group’s founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah took home the Prominent Player Award while Sunway Construction managing director Kwan Foh Kwai was named CEO of the Year.

Structural steel specialist Eversendai Corp Bhd, which is spearheaded by Tan Sri A K Nathan, won the International Achievement Award.

Professor Dr Wan Maimun Wan Abdullah received the inaugural Construction Leading Lady award that recognises women’s role in the construction sector. She is also the first woman president of the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia in 2009-2010.

Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof presented the awards to the winners.

In his opening address at the award presentation, CIDB Malaysia chairman Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali said MCIEA, which is hosted by CIDB, will remain the hightlight of the International Construction Week (ICW) as recognition for the best of the best in the construction sector.

“We are happy that MCIEA has become one of the most coveted and prestigious awards of the construction industry in the country,” he said, adding that the board had received 230 entries for 21 awards in six categories this year.

ICW 2014, which is ongoing at Putra World Trade Centre and will end on Sept 23, is organised by CIDB in collaboration with Ecobuild Southeast Asia.
