Amenities and Facilities
Of late, Alma has seen increased activity. Amid new and a variety of residential areas being constructed as well as mixed-use developments, the opening of AEON Mall Bukit Mertajam in July 2014 – the biggest shopping mall in Bukit Mertajam – has also attracted visitors from all across the mainland of Penang.
There are many kindergartens, primary and secondary schools – vernacular and national schools – as well as a boarding science school located in Alma. There is also a drug rehabilitation centre called Klinik Cure & Care 1Malaysia.
Alma is right in the centre of Jalan Kulim – the longest main road in Seberang Perai Tengah, Jalan Kampung Baru and borders Permatang Tinggi which is in the south, Machang Bubok to the east and Cherok Tok Kun which is popular among locals as the parental and family home of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Cherok Tok Kun is also home to a recreational forest and a favourite hiking place for those whose legs can carry them to the top of Bukit Mertajam -- the highest hill on Penang's mainland. Alma is less than 10km from the Juru exit on the North South Expressway and has undergone many road diversions to ease traffic congestion. Alma is also very close to Bukit Minyak which houses mixed-use developments, an industrial park and many residential areas.
There are many healthcare facilities located within Bukit Mertajam including the KPJ Bukit Mertajam, the Bukit Mertajam Hospital and in Alma itself, there is an abundance of clinics.
Banking institutions and many restaurants, food courts and coffee shops are within a stone's throw in Alma, which is highly populated by Malaysians of Chinese descent.
There is a night market (pasar malam) on Sundays along Alma's longest main road, Jalan Rozhan.
Alma is also a few minutes away from the Church of St Anne, where tens of thousands flock to in late July of every year for its patron saint's feast day. Pilgrims from all over the world throng the grounds of the church for the nine-day event. Opened in 1888, as a small church that could accommodate just hundreds of parishioners, the old church now serves as the basilica and a shrine that is still revered by pilgrims as holy ground. The new church complex was opened in 2002 and can seat more than 1,800 within its structure. It is also known as the biggest church in the northern region of the peninsula.
