Greenlane

 

Overview

Green Lane, situated on Penang Island, refers to the residential area around a major road of the same name that leads out of George Town. Although it has been officially renamed as Jalan Masjid Negeri, locals still stick to its old name. It used to be a quiet country lane before the land around Green Lane was developed in the 1950s as one of the foremost suburbs of George Town when the Bayan Lepas industrial estate was established.

Back in the day, Green Lane was occupied by a small farming community which was gradually replaced by many housing estates and properties including but not limited to Taman Greenview – double-storey terrace houses and semi-detached houses, Taman Green Lane & Taman Hutchings – single-storey terrace houses, Island Glades – mix of single-storey and double-storey terrace/link houses and condominiums, Condo Gembira – 10-storey condominium, Greenlane Park – two blocks of 27-storey condominiums, Central Park – five 36-storey blocks and one low-rise block of condominiums, Greenlane Heights – large residential development consisting of several condominiums (Flamingo Series, Jay Series, Kingfisher Series, Block G), apartments (Block A, B & H and Taman Lembah Hijau) and Greenlane Heights Market poplar for its wet market and food court.

Amenities and Facilities

The most notable landmark in the area was the Penang Free School. But over the years together with increased development followed an increased demand for facilities and other landmarks appeared making this area invaluable to the people in the area and neighboring areas. Religious places – Holy Spirit Cathedral, Trinity Methodist Church, Penang State Mosque, Hong Sun Seah Temple, Wat Nai and Wat Pinbang-Onn; educational institutions – Convent Green Lane, Han Chiang High School and Chung Hwa Confucian High School;  healthcare facilities – Lam Wah Ee Hospital, Optimax Eye Specialist Hospital, Sim Children & Child Heart Clinic and Carl Corrynton Medical Centre; and important organizations – Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), World Red Swastika Society (Buddhism and Taoism based organization similar to Red Cross) and Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children's Association of Penang are some of the important places that offer services to the locals.

Additional amenities and facilities in close proximity to Green Lane include several petrol stations, vehicle dealerships, Gembira Parade shopping mall (mostly beauty product outlets), Batu Lanchang Market, clinics, banks, eateries, beauty parlors and a fitness centre.

Accessibility and Transportation

Today, Green Lane is a triple-lane road which has a highly congested traffic flow, even with the presence of many overpasses such as the Hamilton Road Flyover, Batu Lanchang Autopont Bridge and the Green Lane-Scotland Road Flyover, which makes it easily accessible. Green Lane begins with the Green Lane-Scotland Road Flyover at the intersection between Scotland Road and Air Itam Road and terminates just past the Udini Underpass at the roundabout connecting Gelugor to Highway.
