Overview
Panchor is a small town which was established in 1910. It is next to the Muar River within the Muar district in the state of Johor. Panchor is located approximately 30 kilometres northeast of the Muar town center.
In the past, Panchor used to be an industrious river port where agricultural and plantation produce from the inner areas were transported downstream on barges. As time went by, the improvement in the road networks in the 1970s followed by the construction of the North-South Expressway in the 1980s led to a sharp decline in barge river traffic. Now however, the river is mainly used for fishing.
Panchor town is also synonymous with the abundance of fresh river prawns, which has also drawn in outstation visitors who make specific trips to savor the fresh river prawns.
