Overview
When it was first set up in 1994, the 186 hectare piece of land was envisioned to be a booming township that mostly housed commercial activities bordering between Jalan Permatang Batu and Jalan Muthu Palaniappan in the south and Jalan Permatang Nibong which is north of the area.
It boomed in 2008 when the AEON Seberang Prai City Shopping Centre opened its doors but six years later AEON relocated to Alma and the shopping centre turned into a much quieter Perda City Mall. The mall still operates with Parkson as its anchor tenant and the TGV cinema still runs its reels.
Bandar Perda is the go-to area for the mainlanders of Penang for banking and government-agencies matters as the Inland Revenue Board, the Seberang Perai Municipal Council and even the National Registation Department are housed in the area.
In July 2015, the Bukit Mertajam Railway Station was relocated to Permatang Rawa, a mere two minute drive away from Bandar Perda. The new station was constructed to serve the Electric Train Service.
Located within the Bukit Mertajam boundary, Bandar Perda which houses a few high-rise residential projects, is still undergoing development. Besides housing a private hospital within the township, Bandar Perda has many eatery outlets, a host of trading outlets including car accessories shops, a Fire and Rescue Department station and the Seberang Perai Tengah District police headquarters.
