Batu Maung

 

Overview

One of the smallest towns on Penang island is Batu Maung which still largely consists of villages. From its roots of a fishing village some 20 years ago, the town has undergone massive development predominantly due to its close distance to the Bayan Lepas Industrial Zone some 8km away.

The 17.84km Tun Dr Lim Cheong Eu Expressway – connecting George Town to the town – shortened the travel from its previous time of almost an hour to a mere 15 minutes.

Property Types

Many condominiums and low-cost houses and flats can be seen alongside Jalan Batu Maung or Jalan Permatang Damar Laut which is its main road that connects the town to Bayan Lepas. There are many other residential areas within the town, and more projects are being speculated with news of reclamation hogging the limelight for the facilitation of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) project. More specifically, it is the plights and growing concerns of the fishing village communities that are being highlighted.

Amenities and Facilities

There are a few national schools in Batu Maung, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Maung that was first built and opened in 1884. The town has some stretches of commercial activity amid the kindergartens and host of clinics in and around its borders.

Batu Maung houses an aquarium at the Fisheries Research Institute which belongs to the federal government. The agency deals with marine research and the aquarium is among some of the tourist attractions in the town including the War Museum.

Also famous for its seafood in Kampung Teluk Tempoyak, Batu Maung is also the connecting point of the Penang Second Bridge or the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge which stretches to Batu Kawan, on the mainland in Seberang Perai Selatan.

Batu Maung is some 8km from the Penang International Airport and the Bukit Jambul area, respectively. The latter is a hive of activity where the Equatorial and Vistana hotels are located. There is also a shopping mall in the Bukit Jambul area and commercial areas.
