Bertam

 

Overview

Bertam is a small town located in Kepala Batas, an agricultural district in northern Seberang Perai, Penang. With large areas of palm estates, Bertam got its name from Bertam palm tree.

Kepala Batas, where Bertam is located in, is the ancestral hometown of Malaysia’s former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Bertam is about 20km away from the Penang Bridge, and is accessible from the North South Expressway from the Bertam toll plaza.

Residential developments in Bertam are mostly landed homes.

Amenities and Facilities

Notable places in Bertam include Penang Golf Resort, the Sunshine Bertam shopping mall, Tesco Bertam Perdana and Bertam MBSP Sports Complex.

Bertam also houses primary and secondary schools, as well as higher education institutions such as the USM Dentistry College and the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Penang campus.

Amenities within the Kepala Batas area include a host of banks, clinics, a post office and a library.

Bertam is famous for the Bertam House which history notes used to be the Bertam Estate manager's bungalow in its earlier years. The two-storey house was said to have been built in 1913 when the rubber estate was still active before urban development hit the township of Bertam Perdana.
