Permatang Tinggi is a small town located 20km away from Butterworth in Central Seberang Perai District, mainland Penang. Previously known as Kampung Nanas (Pineapple Village), based on the area’s main industry in pineapple plantation, it was changed to Kampung Baru during the Communist occupation and later on, Permatang Tinggi until the present time.
The neighbourhood of Permatang Tinggi is within the district of Bukit Mertajam, situated at the southernmost part. The small, nondescript rural neighourhood with limited development ends at Sungai Junjung, the river separating Seberang Perai Tengah from Seberang Perai Selatan. Across and to the south of that river is Simpang Ampat. Neighbouring areas are Ayer Itam, Alma and Air Tawar.
Most of the residences in Permatang Tinggi are landed properties consisting of double- storey semi-detached and link houses as well as bungalows. The Permatang Tinggi Light Industrial Park, located within the vicinity of Impiana Commercial Hub in Alma, Bukit Mertajam also comprises double-storey semi-detached and detached light industrial factories.

Though some may consider Permatang Tinggi rural and unmodernised, it is a short trip away from Alma and Bukit Mertajam, a bustling township that covers all grounds for basic modern living. Shopping facilities such as TESCO, AEON Seberang Prai and the Summit Bukit Mertajam Plaza are just a short drive away. Neighbouring towns such as Auto City in Juru is one of Penang’s foremost modern tourist destination. It is a one-stop complex for shopping, F&B outlets, event venue for road shows and carnivals, making it a popular commercial hub in the north. The Paintball Combat Field located right in Permatang Tinggi is also another popular spot for visitors who want to enjoy outdoor activities with a ‘jungle feel’.

Accessibility and Transportation
Permatang Tinggi is conveniently accessible and linked to the North-South Highway and Penang Bridge. From the highway, one can reach the area via interchanges at Juru and Bukit Tambun. Rapid Penang services are also present.
