Overview

Simpang Ampat is a sub-district within the district of South Seberang Perai of mainland Penang.  It is a coastal town situated between Bukit Mertajam and Sungai Bakap. Sungai Jawi flows through the South west area of Simpang Ampat and widens close to Villa Tanjung Permai where other narrower tributaries of Junjung River flow from the east and join it before it opens into the Straits of Malacca. Contiguous on its east, is the Kedah border while the Perak border is about 20 km to its South.

It is comprised of several villages, namely, Bagan Nyior, Kampung Sungai Semilang, Kampung Juru, Kampung Permatan Tinggi, Kampung Kuala Tasik, Kampung Manggis, Kampung Kepala Gajah, Kampung Masjid, Kampung Tok Kangar, Kampung Junjong Mati, Kampung Bukit Kecil Hujung and Kampung Bukit Kecil. Several developed housing estates can also be found within Simpang Ampat that include but are not limited to Juru Villa, Taman Cendana, Taman Seri Juru, Taman Idaman, Taman Murai Jaya, Taman Merpati Indah, Taman Tiong Mas, Taman Tambun Permai, Taman Seri Bayan, Taman Tempua, Taman Kasawari and Taman Jentayu.

Amenities and Facilities

Several of the villages have home-stay facilities for tourists to have a first-hand cultural experience of what life in a traditional Malay village is all about. Mountain View Golf Resort offers a golf course with two 9-hole loops located on elevated terrain surrounded by scenic jungle-clad hills perfect for relaxation with nature. Hospitals providing state of the art facilities are Hospital Sungai Bakap and Hospital Bukit Mertajam located within a 15 minute drive from the town center. The nearest malls,  just on the outskirts of Simpang Ampat, include AEON Mall Bukit Mertajam and Kong Mall Fashion Centre with Perda City Mall situated slightly further away.  Penang State Stadium, on the edge of the town, hosts many football matches. 

Other amenities and facilities include Pasaraya 800 supermarket, police station, post office, several petrol stations, restaurants and hawker stalls, clinics, pharmacies, banks, multiple pasar malams (night market & farmer's market),  several schools such as SK Taman Merak Munaung, SMK Mutiara Impian, SMK Simpang Ampat and GEMS International School Pearl City, several mosques and suraus such as Masjid Jamek Al-Hasaniah and Surau Taman Merak Jaya and a popular Hindu temple, Sri Meenatchi Sundareswarar Devasthanam.

Accessibility and Trasportation

It is accessible via North-South Expressway Northern Route which is a part of Asian Highway 2 and also via Federal Route 1. Alternatively, if traveling by public transport there is a KTM railway station in this town.
