Sungai Dua is located to the north of Seberang Prai on the Penang mainland. A small town with a population of slightly over 30,000 residents, the name is originated by the branching of two river streams into the river Sungai Prai. The emerging new development corridors in Penang due to George Town conurbation, namely the Seberang Jaya-Bukit Mertajam, Butterworth-Bertam and Jawi-Nibong Tebal development corridors have contributed to the economic growth in the areas. Mixed activities such as industrial, commercial and residential areas promotes a linear urban growth pattern. Sungai Dua is one of the township that has emerged between rural villages and paddy fields. The main economic output of the town is agriculture and visitors can find huge acres of paddy fields within Sungai Dua. Currently there are many modern housing development within the area as prices are more affordable on the mainland as compared to the island.

 

Amenities and Facilities

The most popular attraction in Sungai Dua is the Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest, a protected freshwater marshland managed by the Penang State Forestry Department which offers a myriad of flora and fauna. Visitors can also enjoy bird watching in this wetland, which also generates income for the residents as part of Penang’s mainland eco-tourism industry apart from enjoying the natural surroundings.  

There are five public schools, one Chinese vernacular school and a public library within the vicinity of Sungai Dua, among them are Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Kai Chee, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Haji Ahmad Said and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Desa Murni. Klinik Kesihatan Sungai Dua is also available for the residents’ medical needs. The town do not have any fire station but a voluntary fire brigade consisting of local resident groups are active and ready to face any emergency that occurs. Several mosques and temples are also within the area.

 

Accessibility and Transportation

Sungai Dua is accessible via road transportation only. However there is excellent accessibility as the main road in town, Jalan Sungai Dua is connected to the Butterworth Outer Ring Road. From the PLUS highway there is direct exit to Sungai Dua. Rapid Penang provides three inter-district bus service between Kepala Batas and Sungai Dua, served by bus 602, 604 and 606.
