Sri Aman

Overview

Sri Aman is the capital of Sri Aman District and Sri Aman Division in Sarawak, east Malaysia. The town formally changed its name back to Simanggang in October 2019, as announced by the Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Also known as Bandar Sri Aman, Simanggang is 193km or about three hours’ drive away from Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, via Jalan Tun Hussien Onn. Located by the Lupar River, the town is a gateway for visitors heading to Batang Ai National Park and the traditional Iban longhouses along the river.

Simanggang is famous for the unique phenomenon called benak, or tidal bore, of the Lupar River. The wave crest could reach two to three metres high.

The town mainly relies on activities related to agriculture for its economy. It is a trade centre for timber, oil palm, rubber and pepper. Housings in Simanggang are mainly landed homes.

Amenities and Facilities

Simanggang is mainly served by Jalan Akses Sri Aman which links to Jalan Tun Hussien Onn. Bus service is available at Terminal Bus Baru Sri Aman to connect with other parts of east Malaysia.

The town is complete with amenities and facilities for daily conveniences, including schools, supermarkets, wet market, eateries, cafes, retail stores, banks, clinics, hospitals, police station, post office, petrol stations and places of worship. There are also a number of vehicle service shops and hotels.

The Stadium Sri Aman is the largest stadium in the vicinity.

Attractions include Batang Ai National Park, Iban longhouses, Sri Aman Bird Statues, Fort Alice (now Sri Aman Heritage Museum), Taman Panorama Benak and Skrang River Safari.
