Formed in 1974, Gombak is one of the nine districts of Selangor. It has five sub-districts or mukim – Hulu Kelang, Setapak, Batu, Rawang and Ampang. There are four Parliamentary constitutions and nine State Legislative Assemblies in Gombak.
Gombak covers 65,008ha with a population of 682,226 as of 2010.
