KEMAMAN
Overview
Kemaman is a district and parliamentary constituency in the state of Terengganu which is bordered by the Dungun district to the north and the state of Pahang to the south and west.
According to hearsay, Chukai town which is currently the administrative seat of Kemaman, was known for an abundance of a plant called ‘maman’. Every evening, troops of monkeys (‘kera’ in Bahasa Malaysia) would frequent the village to eat the plant and this is how the name Kemaman was derived from these incidents.
Kemaman’s economy is heavily based on the oil, petroleum and steel industries. In fact, the presence of the petroleum and oil industry here has contributed and facilitated the development of this district. However, Kemaman also houses numerous tourist attractions such as Taman Rekreasi Bakau Tinggi, the Kemaman Mini Zoo which is also Terengganu’s only zoo and the Kuala Kemaman fishing village.
