Gelugor

 

Overview

Gelugor is a suburb located in the southern region of George Town, Penang. It is situated along the coast between Jelutong and Sungai Dua and covers an area of about 185 km². The Malay settlement of Sungai Gelugor and Bukit Gelugor are part of this suburb. The land was originally cleared David Brown in the 19^th century, to establish agricultural coconut groves and for cow herding carried out by Malays and Indians, respectively. He eventually became one of the largest land owners in Penang and his estate, Glugor Estate, covers a large portion of the central east coast of Penang Island. The estate and subsequently this area gets its name from the locally growing tamarind tree, Asam Gelugor. During the 20^th century, animal husbandry and agricultural use of land gradually diminished as the land became government land, with government housing being built.

Today, many modern properties can be seen such as Pulse, Palm Palladium, Vertiq, Bayswater, Platino & The Oasis – medium-cost and luxury condominiums; Halaman Sentosa, Sinar Bukit Dumbar & Mutiara Place – medium-cost apartments; Palm Residences & Minden Place – luxurious 3-story bungalows and semi-detached houses; Bukit Gelugor – 2-story terrace house and two high-rise condominium towers; 27 Green Terraces – 3-story terrace houses; and Bukit Dumbar Residences – 3-storey terrace and semi-detached houses.

Cascading 25 meters down a hill behind the Mutiara Indah Apartment is the Bukit Gambir Waterfall. The Light Waterfront Linear Park has a densely planted canopy of trees providing shade for cyclists along the 2km bicycle path which includes a pedestrian bridge across Sungai Gelugor. It is a part of the Light Waterfront integrated development designed to include residential, commercial, retail and entertainment centers to cater to the needs of the locals. Taman Recreasi Jabatan Laut Wilayah Utara is another perfect picnic spot to spend some quality time with the family with ample space for kids to play.

Amenities and facilities in close proximity, enjoyed by residents include various places of worship – Masjid Jamek Sungai Gelugor, Poh Guat Keong Temple and many Hindu temples the largest of which is the Sri Veerama Kaliamman Devasthanam;  shopping outlets to satisfy their retail needs – e-Gate, Plaza Ivory, Tesco Penang and Tesco Extra; sports centers – Nicol David International Squash Centre and Penang Badminton Centre;  and others such as Universiti Sains Malaysia, Lim Wah Ee Hospital, primary and secondary schools, post office, banks and various restaurants and cafes.

Accessibility and Transportation

Connectivity wise, it can be easily accessed from the mainland via the Penang Bridge which links to Tun Dr. Lim Chong Eu Expressway on the island. For those arriving on the island via the ferry, it can also be reached from George Town via Gelugor Highway of Federal Route 6.
