Overview

Tanjung Bungah (also written Tanjong Bungah) is a coastal neighborhood located in the north of Penang Island en route to Batu Ferringhi. The name translates to “Flower Cape” which is aptly named due to the presence of several promontories jutting out between Tanjung Bungah Bay and Tanjung Tokong.

There are several street art portrayed in Penang and Tanjung Bungah is home to one named Give Me 5, a cycling sculpture. It depicts two cyclists giving a 'high-five' as they pass opposite to each other. Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque is built over pillars and stilts in the sea and is the first of its kind in Malaysia. Its Moorish design, 7-storey high minaret and 360-degree panoramic view of the sea highlights its wondrous architecture. A museum every kid will eagerly visit and where every adult will be transported back in time to nostalgic childhood memories is the Penang Toy Museum, the world's largest toy museum. Within its walls are thousands of dolls, toys, figurines and collectibles carefully arranged in several sections, namely, The Chamber of Horrors (for adults), Chamber of Monsters, Chamber of Fantasy, Chamber of Comic Book Heroes, Cave of Dinosaurs, Fields of Combat, Hall of Virtual Reality, Hall of Rock Legends, Hall of Celebrities, Hall of Cartoons, Hall of Beauties (for Barbie lovers) and Star Wars Collections. Each section has special motion activated sound effects to enhance the experience. The really adventurous go kayaking to Pulau Tikus (Rat Island), an uninhabited islet 2km off the coast of Tanjung Bungah with an old Islamic shrine dedicated to Seyad Mohamed Kuddoos Oliyullah and a solar-powered lighthouse. Geok San Soo (Jade Mountain Temple) is a popular Chinese temple with a stage where Chinese operas are performed to commemorate special functions.

Amenities and facilities here include schools, namely, SK Tanjung Bungah, SM Tanjung Bungah, Dalat International School and College General (Catholic seminary), several restaurants, Tanjung Bungah Post Office, SmileBay Dental Surgery, Penang Swimming Club, Chinese Swimming Club, Tanjung Bungah Bus Terminal for public transport and Tanjung Bungah Market, the biggest wet market in northern Penang Island with the contiguous Tanjung Bungah Market Hawker Centre. Island Plaza and Penang Adventist Hospital located in the vicinity satisfy retail and medical requirements.

Accessibility and Transportation

From George Town, it can be accessed through Jalan Burma which leads to Jalan Kelawai and then onto Federal Route 6 which passes directly through Tanjung Bungah.
