KUALA LUMPUR (July 21): Malaysia recorded 15 new cases of Covid-19 as of noon today, pushing the number of active cases to 130.

This is the third straight day that total active cases stood above the 100-mark, after staying below that level for 17 days in a row.

With the additional new cases today, the total number of cases recorded in Malaysia to date is 8,815, said health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Of the 15 new cases, 11 were local transmissions and the other four were imported cases, Noor Hisham told a nationally televised media briefing in Putrajaya.

“Of the 11 locally-transmitted cases, 10 cases involve Malaysians while the other was a non-citizen [who was detected through screening of new admission to Semuja Detention Centre in Sarawak]," he said.

Eight cases were detected in Sarawak, including one in a Kuching medical centre, five cases from the Sentosa cluster and one from the Stutong cluster.

The remaining case in the state was detected during self-screening by a patient who was asymptomatic and admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, said Noor Hisham.

The director-general said one case was found in Selangor through a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) screening, while there was also a new case detected in Sabah during screening of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) cases.

“As for the four imported cases, three involve Malaysians, while the other was a non-citizen who was allowed to enter the country to work,” he said.

The four infected persons had returned from the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, the UK and Indonesia.

Noor Hisham said seven Covid-19 patients were discharged in the 24 hours as of noon today, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 8,562 or 97.1% of overall cases.

He said four patients were treated in intensive care units, with one of them needing respiratory assistance.

However, no new deaths were recorded, keeping the death toll in the country at 123.
