Covid-19 in Australia: Victoria state sees spike in cases

KUALA LUMPUR (July 30): Australia’s state of Victoria has recorded 13 deaths and 723 new cases today, reported the BBC.

This represents the state’s “worst death toll and case rise”, said the broadcaster. This is also Australia’s deadliest day since the pandemic came to the country.

As a result, there are now concerns that Melbourne’s (the capital of Victoria) six-week lockdown may be extended.

The state government told the media that sick people flouting isolation regulations or refusing to be tested in time was “leading to continued spread despite lockdown measures”.

"If you've got symptoms, the only thing you can do is get tested," the BBC reported Premier Daniel Andrews saying.

"You just can't go to work. Because all you'll be doing is spreading the virus."

Melbourne is the first Australian city to make mask-wearing mandatory in public, with the same ruling extended to the rest of Victoria from Monday.

According to the same report, elderly people have made up the majority of deaths in the past fortnight.
