MOSCOW (August 11): Russia president Vladimir Putin said the country has developed the first vaccine which is believed to offer “sustainable immunity” against the Covid-19 virus, according to reports from Reuters and AFP.

The reports said Russia has registered the vaccine and become the first country in the world to grant regulatory approval to a Covid-19 vaccine after less than two months of human testing.

Speaking at a government meeting on state television, Putin said the vaccine is developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute, one of his daughters had the vaccine.

According to an AFP report, Russia has been pushing the development of the vaccine and hopes to launch mass production within weeks to produce “several million” doses a month by next year.

The World Health Organisation data showed that there are more than 100 possible vaccines being developed around the world to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. At least four are now in final Phase III human trials.
