KUALA LUMPUR (May 15): Property developer Tropicana Corp Bhd celebrated its first foray into education with the official opening of St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (SJIIM) today.

The school, located in the Tropicana Petaling Jaya township area, opened its doors on Aug 29, 2016. It now has about 500 students, from nursery to diploma levels.

“Tropicana Corp is fully committed to providing a learning environment that will complement the Ministry of Education’s aspirations to develop students who will be globally competitive,” said Tropicana's group chief executive officer Datuk Yau Kok Seng at the launch today.

“Our methodology will promote and develop critical and creative thinking capacities that enable our students to perform in both the sciences and the arts,” he added.

SJIIM is a Lasallian educational institution and brother school to St Joseph’s Institution International Singapore and the school’s Board of Governors comprise representatives from Tropicana, the Lasallian Asia Partnership for International Schools (LAPIS) and the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD).

“Establishing SJII in Malaysia was an important step for us in the expansion of our school beyond the shores of Singapore and as proud alumni of the Lasallian education system, we are confident of the public’s recognition of the values a Lasallian education gives to a child,” said SJIIM board of governors' chairman, Michael Sng.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzhir Khalid was also present at the launch, which included a presentation of a cheque for RM75,000 to the Lasalian Mission from the school’s Lasallian Fund to aid Lasallian outreach and service activities in Malaysia. — theedgemarkets.com
