PETALING JAYA (Aug 21): The number of construction projects that were assessed with the Quality Assessment System in Construction (Qlassic) have increased 15% to 311 projects in 2016 from the previous year. Of the 311 projects, 43 achieved scores of more than 80%.

According to the Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof, there was a total of 4,785 and 4,263 development projects in 2015 and 2016 respectively, (both residential and commercial developments) but the number of projects accessed with Qlassic amounted to just 270 and 311 projects in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

“Although Qlassic adoption has increased year-on-year, there is still plenty of room to grow,” he said at the launch of Qlassic Day  today.

In his speech, Fadillah stressed the importance of public awareness in choosing quality properties that have been accessed with Qlassic as it emphasised good workmanship quality.

Qlassic is a system and method to assess and evaluate the quality of workmanship of building projects based on the Construction Industry Standard (CIS 7), and was established as a means to objectively compare the quality of workmanship between construction projects through a scoring system.

Organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia, Qlassic Day is an annual event to promote the use of the quality assessment system.

Datuk Ir Ahmad ‘Asri Abdul Hamid, chief executive of CIDB Malaysia, noted that 43 developers and contractors have achieved over 80% score based on the Qlassic in 2016.

Perumahan Kinrara Bhd, a member of I&P Group achieved the current highest Qlassic score of 85% for their private residential project Bandar Kinrara Phase 8A5B. The contractor recognised for building this project is Vilabina Utara (M) Sdn Bhd, while the Architect firm is BEP Arkitek Sdn Bhd.

There were 46 and 24 projects that achieved above 80% in 2015 and 2014, respectively.

“With the current Qlassic growth trend that we are on, we are confident that we will be able to achieve the quality and safety aspirations as outlined in the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) 2016-2020,” he said.

The Quality Guidebook for Homeowners was also launched in conjunction with the event. The guidebook is an information kit on Qlassic and how one can assess the quality of a home using Qlassic methods.
