PETALING JAYA (Feb 6): Three employees of property developer UEM Sunrise Bhd were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the company confirmed today.

“As a company that has zero tolerance towards graft, we have given and will continue to give our full cooperation to MACC in the investigation,” it said in a statement.

Yesterday, mStar reported that a 44-year-old deputy general manager of UEM Sunrise was detained at the commission’s Johor headquarters at about 3pm yesterday to assist investigations into alleged abuse of power involving suspicious transactions worth over RM2.4 million.

The MACC had also apprehended a 55-year-old project director and the deputy general manager’s 34-year-old personal assistant to facilitate investigations.

The deputy general manager and director were understood to have ensured that landscape contracts directly under their supervision that were worth around RM44 million were awarded to eight companies through e-bidding, one-off contract and maintenance.

The deputy general manager would order his executives to award scores of 80% to contractors in charge of landscape maintenance works to ensure they receive full payments for their monthly claims.

Meanwhile, the project director would approve the claims submitted by the contractors so that they receive the full payment as stated in their contract.

Bernama, citing a source, said suspicious monies amounting to over RM2.4 million were deposited into a bank account under the deputy general manager and his wife from the eight contracting companies via four proxies.

“Four other individuals, believed to be the proxies, were also detained between 10am and 12noon yesterday at the MACC headquarters in Shah Alam, Klang and Melaka to assist in the investigation into the case, which took place between 2013 and 2017,” the source said.

The MACC had frozen 15 accounts belonging to the deputy general manager and the contracting companies in connection with the case, reported Bernama.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Datuk Azam Baki said the investigating team had gone to several locations, including the contracting companies, to obtain documents related to the investigations under Section 17 (a) of the MACC Act 2009.

“We will study all the documents to ascertain whether or not there are elements of corruption and abuse of power in the case,” he said.

The suspects are expected to be taken to the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court today for remand proceedings.
