KUALA LUMPUR (March 14): Melaka’s Upeh Island is famous as a site for turtles landing to lay their eggs.

It is with this in mind that efforts are now being made to redevelop the buildings in the island’s resort, which will renamed D'Upeh Wellness Resort & Spa.

Costing RM20 million, the project will involve the Chief Minister Inc and Mrails International Sdn Bhd, Bernama reported today.

Melaka chief minister, Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the refurbished resort will have 39 chalets which will incorporate the architectural features of Malaysia’s multi-ethnic population.

He said the island is expected to host around 50,000 tourists with the spruced up resort.

"The island is also special because it is one of the locations for a turtle species that landed last year, with 36 turtles landed with 4,515 eggs successfully collected.

"The re-development of the area will be a catalyst for the development of the local economic sector as well as add value to tourism products in the state," he told the media after witnessing the signing of the joint-venture agreement in Melaka today, Bernama reported.
