KUALA LUMPUR (April 26): Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings will soon announce the setting up of a data centre — their first in Asean — in Cyberjaya, Malaysia, said Malaysia Tourism Promotion chairman Datuk Dr Siew Ka Wei.

“Tencent will announce that they are setting up a data centre in Cyberjaya to service the entire Asean region [next week]. We are going to be the hub for Tencent for their regional data service.

“And by the end of the year, they will also set up an incubation centre here with a local partner, offering their technology and their reach into the China market.

“Start-ups with great ideas could benefit from this because this is an unprecedented idea,” he told reporters on the sidelines during the one-day conference themed "Retail Transformation, Creativity and Beyond" organised by the Malaysia Retailers Association (MRA).

He added that the Malaysia Smart Tourism Initiative 4.0 powered by Tencent will go live in July or August, helping Tourism Malaysia to boost tourist arrivals to the country.

The initiative includes the creation of 40 five-minute videos that showcase unique holiday experiences in Malaysia including gastronomy, soft adventure tourism, resorts and beaches, history, culture and heritage.
