PETALING JAYA (June 14): The Kedah government has urged the people to pay their quit rent arrears to increase its revenue and strengthen the state’s financial management, reported Bernama.

The accumulated arrears would affect the state’s income and there would not be enough revenue to implement plans for the wellbeing of the people, said its Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.

"When such arrears pile up, the state's revenue would be affected and some expenditure which had been planned could not be implemented.

"We know that those who did not pay did so not because they could not afford it. Upon our investigations, they were found to be reluctant to pay as each house has two to three cars,” he said.

The state’s finances are not strong as revenue was limited while spending rose, so he urged its residents to fulfill their responsibility by paying what was due.

“Before this, reminders and warning letters had been sent but we are raising this matter again as we want to give the people time to pay up, and should it fail we will consider other measures,” he said.
